How is SimHerd used?

This page will you help as a veterinarian discover how you can use SimHerd in your daily practice and how you can get started with SimHerd. You are also welcome to contact us if you would like an introductory meeting or have any questions.

In Denmark more than half of the cattle practices have access to and use SimHerd Expert actively in their practice as farm vets. SimHerd is a big simulation model, that can simulate anything in a dairy herd based on herd specific key figures. The model allows you to put economics on your action plans for herd, and it can quantify the effect of disease prevention and interventions. Calculations can also be used to help persuade the bank that potential investments will give the farmer a good return on investment e.g. investing in sensor technology or improved calving facilities.

The SimHerd model can be seen as a “What if…..” game. A game that lets you see the effect of halving the incidence of mastitis, reducing claw diseases, improve reproduction and so on. And if you make these changes, how much will you increase your revenue next year or in 10 years? Or said in other words how much money can you save by investing in a new calving area, new mattresses, disinfectants, vaccines…

SimHerd helps you with your advisory:

  • Makes communication about complex issues easier
  • Qualifies and puts economics on your advisory
  • Finds the “low-hanging fruits” in ther herd
  • Provides a strong scientific foundation

The primary tool for veterinarians is the Animal Health Economics analysis (AHE). It is based on the farmers own key figures and data and identifies the health issues in the herd, that have the largest economic potential for improvement. The AHE consists of 15 different scenarios that calculate the effects of improving everything from mastitis and reproduction to management changes. It is also possible to make calculations on single improvements or actions plans such as:

  • Decreasing the prevelance of Digital Dermatitis
  • Changing to sand-bedding
  • Extending the calving interval
  • Investing in sensor technology

It is now also possible to not only put economics, but also the potential climate impact on all calculations. It is very important to not only think of economics and animal welfare, but also take the climate into account when advising dairy farmers. The veterinarian has an essential role in decreasing the climate impact of our dairy herds – Healthy cows = High lifetime production = Climate friendly cows!

”The Animal Health Economics analysis is the key to good herd health advisory. It helps identify the problem areas in the herd
