(2025), Journal of Dairy Science. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0022030224013717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the full article here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"462\">Digital health tools are changing dairy management\u2014but do they pay off?<\/strong> That was the key question addressed in a recent peer-reviewed study, where <strong data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"571\">SimHerd played a central role<\/strong> in evaluating the return on investment (ROI) of sensor-based disease monitoring in dairy herds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1832495640\">\n\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1392579151\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3>Evaluation og a sensor bolus in a field trail<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"838\">The study, was conducted by German researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lfl.bayern.de\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute f\u00fcr Agricultural Engineering and Animal Husbandry, Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hswt.de\/en\/about\/organisation\/departments\/sustainable-agriculture-and-energy-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture and Energy Systems, University of Applied Science Weihenstephan-Triesdorf<\/a> in collaboration with SimHerd. It examined a <strong data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"841\">commercial rumen bolus sensor<\/strong> capable of tracking core body temperature and activity levels to detect early signs of common diseases such as: mastitis, hypocalcemia, retained placenta, and claw- and leg problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1218\">Data was collected over a two-year period from 65 cows at a research and demonstration farm. The system&#8217;s detection rates varied across disease types, showing the <strong data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1290\">highest sensitivity for hypocalcemia and retained placenta (up to 64%)<\/strong>, and the lowest for lameness-related conditions.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1270\">Modeling Economic Outcomes<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1389\" data-end=\"1588\">To assess the financial impact of using such a sensor system, researchers used the <a href=\"https:\/\/simherd.com\/en\/simherd-expert\/\"><strong data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1479\">SimHerd Expert model<\/strong><\/a> to simulate herd performance across three herd health scenarios: <strong data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1553\">poor<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1555\" data-end=\"1566\">average<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1587\">good health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1732\">A panel of <strong data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1634\">nine practicing veterinarians<\/strong> provided expert estimates on how earlier detection might affect key health parameters, including: treatment costs, days of milk withdrawal, somatic cell count (SCC), and risk of mild vs. severe diseases cases.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1732\">These values were used to parameterize SimHerd, which then simulated <strong data-start=\"1925\" data-end=\"1946\">10,000 iterations<\/strong> per scenario to estimate changes in <strong data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2004\">gross margin (GM)<\/strong> with and without the sensor system. The analysis also accounted for investment costs, potential labor savings, and time spent following up on false-positive alerts.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2228\">Key Findings: Economic Return Varies with Herd Health<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2315\">The economic outcomes differed significantly depending on the herd&#8217;s baseline health:<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1068839185\">\n\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1714352512\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1103480455\">\n\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1424248947\" class=\"col small-12 large-12\"  >\n\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2433\">\ud83d\udfe2 <strong data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2343\">Poor-health herds<\/strong>: Net returns of up to <strong data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2387\">\u20ac119 per cow\/year<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2432\">nearly 100% chance of a positive ROI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2559\">\ud83d\udfe1 <strong data-start=\"2439\" data-end=\"2463\">Average-health herds<\/strong>: Variable but often positive returns, depending on assumptions about labor and sensor accuracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2664\">\ud83d\udd34 <strong data-start=\"2565\" data-end=\"2586\">Good-health herds<\/strong>: Lower or even negative returns, due to fewer disease events to detect early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2917\"><strong data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2678\">The figure<\/strong> from the study illustrates this clearly: the probability of a <strong data-start=\"2739\" data-end=\"2767\">positive economic return<\/strong> is substantially higher in herds with poorer health.
